My Story
Jamila Ajanaku is a distinguished member of the Chigata Art Institute, bringing decades of experience and a deep passion for the arts to the organization. Her journey in the world of dance and education began in 1980 when she founded the Katherine Dunham Center for the Performing Arts, where she served as the director and choreographer until 2012. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic landscape and nurturing young talents in dance and the performing arts.
With a Bachelor's degree in Dance from Southern Illinois University, Jamila's commitment to arts education led her to various roles over the years. She served as a dance instructor at St. Louis Catholic Academy School of Fine Arts in 2017, where she shared her expertise and inspired students with her passion for dance. In 2012, she contributed her skills as a dance assistant at Afriky Lolo Dance Company, gaining valuable experience in different dance styles and techniques.
From 2000 to 2019, Jamila dedicated her talents as a dance and art instructor and choreographer at the Harambee Institute, where she not only taught dance but also fostered creativity and artistic expression among her students. Her impact on the arts community has been profound, and her continued dedication is evident in her current role as a Substitute Teacher at East St. Louis Charter High School, where she continues to inspire and educate the next generation of artists.
